Chapter 22

The Choice

“I’m getting on this fucking boat now or your brother dies!”

Panic struck Marlon’s features, and he peeked from around the corner again to see the admiral making his way toward the boat while holding Mike like a shield, digging his gun into the side of his captive’s head.

“Shit!” he whispered harshly. “He has Mike.”

Charlotte’s trembling hand rose to her lips. “Oh God. What do we—?”

A muffled scream came from behind Marlon, and he turned to see Marshal Leroy dragging Charlotte back into the battle zone, one hand covering her mouth as the other, holding a gun, wrapped around her waist.

“No. We’re taking the boat, or I’ll blow her brains out,” said Marshal Leroy.

“Fuck!” Marlon stepped out from behind the corner, hands raised. He looked between Mike and Charlotte, both with guns to their heads, as he sidled toward Trish and Richard still standing guard of the boat at their backs. “We can work this out, okay? Just don’t hurt them.”

“What are we going to do?” Trish asked.

He shook his head. “I don’t know.”

“Time’s up!” yelled the admiral, tightening his grip as Mike struggled. “Who’s it gonna be?”

Marshal Leroy lifted Charlotte a little more as if to show his resolve.

“My patience is wearing thin. You’ve got till the count of five.”

“Go ahead and give it to him,” Marshal Leroy said. “Then watch your girlfriend die.”

“One…two…”

“No, Kirk, please,” said Trish, the sound of her voice calling him by his first name momentarily distracting the admiral. “Don’t do this.”

“Three,” he said, meeting her eyes. “Four…”

“Wait!” Marlon held up his hands before letting them fall to his side in defeat. “Okay, fine. I’ll give it to—”

A crackling snap pulled their attention toward the boat. Madame Monica sat in the lifeboat with her dog, a small knife in her hand as she worked on the right rope, having already cut the left.

“Monica!” Trish yelled. “What are you doing?”

Monica continued sawing at the bindings. “Isn’t it obvious?”

“That old lady’s trying to steal the boat!” shouted Richard as he tried unsuccessfully to reach the rope.

“Not without me!” shouted the admiral as he aimed a shot at her.

She saw him at the last moment and ducked. His bullet hit the rope instead, releasing the lifeboat. The dog, alarmed by the gunshot, jumped off, just barely making it back onto the deck before the boat plunged down the side of the ship toward the water below.

As the lifeboat collided with the sea, Monica almost fell out but managed to hold tight. She sighed deeply, holding the sides as the swaying slowed. “Goodness, Monique. That was entirely too close for comfort. But we’re safe now, my sweet girl.” Monica squinted in the darkness. “Monique? Monique, my baby, where are you?”

A squealing bark sounded from above her.

Monica looked up, spotting her companion peeking over the edge. “Monique! No! My baby!” Tears burst forth, and Monica stood with her arms reaching toward her pet, far too great a distance between them. “Monique! No!” she screamed through her sobs as the current pulled her out to sea.
